Met Donovan in Nashville lived across the hall
Said he moved from Portland on a emotional retreat
Worked for the railroad, explained being bumped
Lost his love, moved down south in defeat

I think we helped raise his spirits, we laughed and drank on a picnic table
Said he was thin-lipped and Nordic, soon he seemed more emotionally stable

One day his ex-love's father showed up in town
Wanted him to help him save his daughter
From her lover down in old Mexico
She was expecting but reluctantly agreed to go

They got back together, things seemed swell, a pregnant Anglo, Hope Sandoval
Round and lovely with black eyeliner, we took a smiling black and white picture I recall

We moved to Portland, he showed us around
Lamented the move back where his life had begun

But he was helping raise another man's son
